How To Make Tasty Cold Brew Coffee at Home

in The Daily Grind

If you crave good strong coffee in the summer, but can't handle the heat, then there’s only one solution: cold brew coffee. This method guarantees a smooth and icy cup, every time.

Making cold brew coffee is no big secret and you do not need to obtain the skills of a barista in order to master this. You don’t even need any special equipment other than a large container for making the coffee and a strainer.

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Grind the coffee beans (coarse grind).
  2. Combine the ground coffee and filtered water in a jar (1cup coffee grounds per 4 cups water).
  3. Stir to incorporate.
  4. Steep the coffee overnight in the fridge (12-18hrs).
  5. Strain the coffee concentrate (line a small strainer with cheesecloth or flour sack cloth).
  6. Transfer to the cold brew to a clean jar for longer-term storage.
  7. Make your iced coffee.

NOTE: This is a concentrated brew and is best served 2-3oz of coffee per 8oz drink (ie. milk or water) adjust to taste.

WHY SHOULD YOU COLD BREW?

The slow brewing method infuses and pulls all the amazing coffee flavor from the beans along with the caffeine! but leaves behind most of the compounds that can make coffee taste bitter and sour. Cold brewed coffee is rich in flavor, smooth and almost sweet-tasting. Perfect for iced coffee and cold coffee drinks.

HELPFUL TIPS

  • The grind right
Cold brew requires a coarse grind. This keeps the brew from getting bitter overnight. Grind your coffee to the consistency of raw sugar or coarse corn meal.

  • Use filtered water
This should already be common knowledge for good tasting coffee brewing. Your cup of coffee will produce a cleaner, sweeter flavor if you use filtered water to make it.

  • Strain slowly
Avoid pressing or squeezing the coffee grounds, as that extracts bitter flavors. You might be asking yourself, Can’t I just strain the coffee with a coffee filter? You could, but it slows the straining process and occasionally the paper filters tear, creating more of a mess than anyone should have to deal with before coffee.
